Namboole, Uganda: The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) has announced that fans wearing jerseys or T-shirts with abusive or sensational prints will be barred from accessing Namboole National Stadium during Uganda’s crunch quarterfinal tie against Senegal this Saturday.
Speaking to journalists at the Uganda Media Centre on Wednesday, Ms Diana Nabuuso, a member of the LOC, said the ban is aimed at safeguarding Uganda’s image during the continental showpiece.
“Those who come with offensive prints on their T-shirts will not be allowed to enter the stadium. This measure is to ensure peace and discipline during the match,” Ms Nabuuso stressed.
The restriction comes as Uganda prepares to host one of the tournament’s most anticipated fixtures, with the Cranes facing Senegal in a 5 p.m. kickoff.
In a related development, Mr Dennis Mugimba, the Chairperson of the LOC’s Communication and Signage Subcommittee, earlier revealed that, as it has been the norm during group stage fixtures, all match tickets will be sold exclusively online, in line with CAF’s directive to curb ticket forgery.
He added that “CAF has restricted purchases to a maximum of three tickets per person. There will be no physical tickets in circulation.” He urged fans to adhere to the seating arrangements indicated on their tickets.
Uganda Cranes sealed their historic qualification on Monday with a dramatic 3-3 comeback draw against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, topping Group C with seven points. The achievement has been hailed as a product of the squad’s resilience, backed by the overwhelming support of fans who have consistently filled Namboole in large numbers.
By press time on Wednesday afternoon, the official ticketing website still indicated sales would commence on August 21, despite CAF’s directive for availability starting today morning.
