Iganga, Uganda: Students have been urged to embrace sports as an essential part of their education, with leaders stressing that physical activity not only boosts health but also supports mental well-being.
Speaking at the inter-house sports gala finals at Lubega Institute of Nursing and Health Professionals in Buseyi, the Chairman of Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) and First Deputy Prime Minister of Busoga Kingdom, Prof. Dr. Muhamadi Lubega Kisambira, applauded students for their performance and encouraged them to make sports a lifestyle.
“Sports are key to health. They help students maintain fitness, mental sharpness, and the discipline needed for academic success. I am pleased with the skills I have seen here today,” Prof. Lubega said while awarding winners.
The three-day competitions brought together four houses, Luwangula, Otana, Nakisige, and Mwiru, which competed in football, volleyball, netball, and other games. Otana House emerged the overall champions, winning the football title and walking away with a bull, while Luwangula House dominated in volleyball and netball.

The Institute’s sports master, Mr. Magomu Peter, emphasized the importance of sports to education.
“Sports keep our students active and physically refreshed. They also improve mental well-being, helping learners think better in class. Beyond that, sports build teamwork and social interaction,” Magomu noted.
He added that sporting activities were also a path to career opportunities. “You may be a nurse, a doctor, or a clinical officer, but sports can still be part of your life. Talents can earn you money while you serve your profession. Many people today are living off their talents,” he said.
Cultural and Institutional Recognition
The event also doubled as a recognition ceremony for winners of the recent intercultural gala, where Abasoga Nseete (Basoga) took first place with Shs1.5m, followed by Nkoba za Mbogo (Baganda) with Shs1m, and Bamasaba, who received Shs0.5m.

Additionally, Lubega Institute was honored by the UMSC as the Best Muslim Tertiary Institute in Uganda, following nationwide online nominations ahead of the UMSC at 50 celebrations. The institute received a bull as a prize, which was officially handed over by Prof. Lubega during the ceremony.
