Uganda Law Society, UTAMU partner to equip Lawyers with digital skills

ULS Vice President Anthony Asiimwe and UTAMU Board Chairperson Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba exchange documents after signing an MoU to boost lawyers’ digital skills at ULS offices in Kampala on August 18, 2025.

Kampala, Uganda: The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has entered into a landmark partnership with Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU) to equip lawyers with digital skills essential for the modern legal practice.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on Monday, August 18, 2025, will see UTAMU design and deliver tailored training programs, including Continuing Legal Education (CLE) accredited courses, to strengthen the digital capacity of ULS members.

ULS Vice President Anthony Asiimwe said the partnership is a timely response to the growing need for technology-driven legal practice, warning that lawyers who fail to embrace digital transformation risk irrelevance.

“A lawyer who will not embrace technology will soon become irrelevant in the job market. We must build capacity, embrace efficiency, and move with the world. Every profession is embracing technology, and the legal fraternity cannot afford to be left behind,” Asiimwe said.

He commended Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba, Chairperson of the UTAMU Board of Directors, for the collaboration, noting that it places ULS members at the forefront of digital innovation in the legal sector.

On his part, Prof Baryamureeba emphasized that the MoU focuses on capacity building, legal research, and the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in law practice.

“Across the world, AI is already supporting legal research, case management, and public service. For us, this partnership ensures that ULS members acquire practical digital skills to improve their work efficiency. Our target is that 99% of members benefit from this training, including those in remote areas,” Baryamureeba said.

He revealed that UTAMU intends to extend a similar digital training arrangement to the Judiciary to ensure the entire justice system is not left behind in the era of AI.

ULS Chief Executive Officer Christine Awori hailed the MoU as a “defining milestone” in transforming the profession, while ULS President Isaac Ssemakadde, speaking remotely, said the deal marked a radical shift from analogue practice towards a digital-first legal fraternity.
