Leuven, Belgium: Uganda’s sprint sensation Shida Leni delivered a stunning performance at the MEETING VOOR MON in Leuven on Saturday, smashing the national record in the 300 meters and reaffirming her place among the country’s greatest track athletes.
Leni, who is best known for her dominance in the 400 meters, electrified the crowd with an explosive run that saw her cross the line in record-breaking fashion. Her versatility and speed drew standing ovations from spectators and established her as a force beyond her primary discipline.
In another highlight for Team Uganda, Tom Dradriga powered to victory in the men’s 800 meters, showcasing his rising talent and cementing himself as one to watch in international middle-distance running. Tony Omara (1500m) and Knight Aciru also represented Uganda with determination, earning praise for their spirited efforts.
Uganda’s Ambassador to Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and the European Union, H.E. Mirjam Blaak Sow, led a delegation of supporters and hailed the athletes for lifting the Ugandan flag high. She commended their dedication and resilience, pledging continued government support to sports development.
“Our athletes embody the spirit of Uganda, showcasing resilience and excellence,” Ambassador Blaak remarked as she presented tokens of appreciation to inspire the runners toward even greater success.
The Embassy of Uganda in Brussels, which facilitated the athletes’ participation by securing the necessary European visas, said the achievements in Leuven were a clear demonstration of how diplomatic support and sporting talent can work hand in hand to bring Uganda global recognition.
The Leuven triumph, capped by Leni’s new national record, has been described as a defining moment in Uganda’s athletics journey, igniting hope for a new wave of international success.
