BREAKING: Kyeswa bows out of NRM CEC race after high-level talks with Museveni

Kampala, Uganda: The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Aspirant for Central Region Vice Chairmanship, Mr Kyeswa Hakim, has officially withdrawn from the race, just a day after claiming he had been successfully vetted by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

Kyeswa, who had for months rallied young people under his slogan “Nothing for Us without Us”, announced his withdrawal on Friday afternoon following consultations with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the NRM National Chairman, and the Central Executive Committee (CEC).

In a statement issued via his socials at 3:34 pm, Kyeswa thanked his supporters, family, and friends for standing with him, particularly the youth who championed his campaign bid.

“After consultations with the Party Chairman, H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, and the NRM Central Committee, I have made the decision to withdraw my candidacy for the position of NRM Vice Chairman, Central Region,” he stated.

The ONC Digital Media boss emphasized that the decision was taken in the spirit of dialogue and unity within the ruling party.

“This experience has reinforced my belief that dialogue is a powerful tool for unity and progress. While this specific chapter closes, our mission remains. We shall continue to serve and advance the interests of our people in other capacities. The journey continues,” he added.

What this means for Central CEC Race

Kyeswa’s withdrawal is widely seen as a move that consolidates support around the senior figures backed by the party establishment ahead of the NRM Delegates Conference scheduled for August 27–28, 2025.

Party insiders suggest that President Museveni’s hand in the decision was crucial, reflecting the Chairman’s strategy to avoid a fragmented vote in the Central Region, a zone that remains a political battleground between NRM and opposition forces.

Analysts argue that Kyeswa’s exit strengthens the chances of more experienced party heavyweights such as Kyeyune Haruna Kasolo, who is a leading contender in the race to oust incumbent Kiwanda Suubi, but also signals Museveni’s continued influence in guiding succession debates within the NRM top organ.

For the youth, Kyeswa’s exit leaves a vacuum in the race, given that he was the only youthful contender positioning himself as a generational bridge within the ruling party. His promise to keep serving “in other capacities” suggests he may be lined up for appointment in government or a strategic party role.
