CHAN 2024: Madagascar stun Kenya in penalties, Morocco edge Tanzania to make semi-finals

Madagascar players celebrate after knocking Kenya out 4-3 on penalties to reach the CHAN 2024 semifinals.

Nairobi, Kenya: The quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 revealed dramatic twists on Friday as co-hosts Kenya and debutants Tanzania were eliminated, while Madagascar and Morocco secured their spots in the final four.

Kenya, making their historic CHAN debut, fell 4–3 on penalties to Madagascar after a tense 1–1 draw at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Alphonce Omija put the Harambee Stars ahead early, but Fenohasina Razafimaro equalized from the spot before the Malagasy held their nerve in the shootout.

But Omija then turned from hero to villain after missing his penalty in the shoot-out, which paved way for Toky Rakotondraibe to score the decisive kick that sealed Madagascar’s progress to the last four.

Morocco Edges Tanzania in Dar

In a tightly contested match in Dar es Salaam, Morocco edged past Tanzania with a 1–0 victory. Oussama Lamlioui’s second-half goal sealed the win for Morocco, who held on despite intense pressure from Tanzania late in the game. The Atlas Lions’ composure and defensive strength earned them a well-deserved semifinal berth.

Road to the Semis

Madagascar, known for their resilience in the tournament, having reached the last four in their debut 2022 tourney, now advance to face the winner of Sudan vs. Algeria at the semifinals, continuing their impressive run of this year’s edition.

While Morocco continue their quest for a third CHAN title, bringing experience and consistency that have made them a feared force in knockout stages since 2014. They now await the winner between Uganda and Senegal who play at the Mandela National Stadium on Saturday, August 23, 2025.
