Museveni, Kigongo cleared as sole candidates for NRM top leadership

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and NRM First Vice Chairman Al-Hajji Moses Kigongo (pictured) have been endorsed unopposed by CEC for the party’s top seats ahead of the 2026 elections.

Kampala, Uganda: The Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has unanimously endorsed President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as the party’s sole candidate for both Party Chairman and Presidential Flagbearer ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

The CEC, which is the party’s top decision-making organ, also confirmed Al-Hajji Moses Kigongo as the unopposed candidate to retain his position of First National Vice Chairman, cementing his long-standing role as a key pillar in the NRM top leadership.

Addressing journalists on Friday, August 22, the Secretary General Richard Todwong said the duo’s endorsement as unopposed candidates was a symbol of unity and continuity at the helm of the party as Uganda heads into another electoral cycle.

“As required by the party constitution, aspirants for top positions are vetted by CEC before their names are presented to NEC, which then forwards them to the National Conference. I am happy to report that His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was vetted unopposed, having been nominated unopposed,” Todwong stated.

He added that Kigongo’s sole candidature equally demonstrates the overwhelming confidence in his ability to provide consistent and tested leadership.

While other positions have attracted multiple aspirants, Todwong revealed that the party leadership is encouraging dialogue and consensus to reduce contestation. “Some candidates have voluntarily stepped down after reflection, not out of coercion but persuasion,” he explained.

Todwong also disclosed that talks are ongoing between First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga and Speaker of Parliament Anita Among to harmonize their stance on the Second National Vice Chairperson (Female) slot currently held by Kadaga.

Should talks fail, the SG said, it will be left to the National Executive Council (NEC) to decide who takes the slot.

Preparations for the NEC meeting are underway, with accreditation for Members of Parliament on the NRM ticket, LC5 chairpersons, district executives, and city and municipal mayors completed on Friday ahead of Saturday’s meeting before the National Chairman at State House, Entebbe.
