Bukedea, Uganda: The management of Bukedea Comprehensive School has called on parents and guardians to fully utilize the second-term holiday by engaging students in productive work while balancing it with academic revision and assignments.
Head teacher Enock Nadanga, in a circular dated August 21, 2025, emphasized the need for parents to take an active role in guiding learners, especially under the new competence-based curriculum.
He noted that many parents are still stuck in the old mindset of marks-based assessment with distinctions, credits, and failures, instead of embracing the modern focus on abilities, innovation, hands-on skills, and hidden talents.
“Parents should carefully read and interpret their child’s report cards. Grades are not just numbers; they are accompanied by teachers’ comments on behavior, effort, participation, and strengths. These must be discussed with the student for effective progress,” Nadanga said.
He further cautioned against the rising vice of students destroying report cards to conceal poor performance, urging parents to always verify with the school. “If your child claims they did not receive a report, kindly call the school, we will provide a soft copy,” he added.
Bukedea Comprehensive School Managing Director, Prof. Jonas Gumisiriza, commended stakeholders for their cooperation in ensuring a smooth term. He underscored the school’s commitment to maintaining its top academic position in Uganda.
“Remaining at the top demands sleepless nights and joint collaboration. Parents should support learners at home, balancing academic revision with participation in home chores and productive activities like gardening,” Prof. Gumisiriza said.
He also urged parents to begin paying school fees early, especially for candidates, to avoid disruptions during the reporting week.
Parent Hellen Rose Acam appreciated the administration’s dedication, noting that her children, Ajulong Faith Juliet and Adeke Esther Patience of Senior Five, had returned home safely with positive experiences from the school.
