FUFA injects UGX 2.5Bn into UPL, sets five-year growth target

Kampala, Uganda: The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has confirmed that at least UGX 2.5 billion will be invested into the Uganda Premier League (UPL) for the 2025/26 season.

The announcement was made as part of the new FUFA Competitions Development Programme (FCDP), which aims at boosting football competitions across the country.

FUFA says the programme is designed to raise both the sporting standards and the business side of football in Uganda.

The money is expected to help clubs improve their performance on and off the pitch, while also making the league more competitive and attractive.

According to FUFA Communications Director Ahmed Hussein, this plan was agreed upon during the FUFA Elective Assembly held in Hoima in July. Members tasked FUFA to find ways of bringing back strong competition systems that support long-term growth.

“During the FUFA Elective Assembly in Hoima in July of this year, it was approved that FUFA looks at avenues of how to reinstall a format for club football competitions systems to address the sporting and economic objectives. All these would enhance the quality of the football leagues,” Hussein explained.

Under this programme, FUFA has approved several steps. First, it will create and implement the Competitions Development Programme.

Second, a special fund known as ‘FUFA Goal’ will be established to provide resources for this programme.

Third, UGX 2.5 billion will be injected into the UPL every season to help it grow into a self-sustaining league within the next five years. FUFA also plans to find more resources to support other competitions and reforms.

FUFA has confirmed that it will meet the UPL Board and the league clubs on Tuesday, 26th August 2025, to discuss how the money will be shared and used. This meeting will guide how clubs benefit directly from the new funding.

The federation believes that this step will not only help clubs financially but will also improve the quality of football in Uganda, strengthen the league brand, and create more opportunities for players, coaches, and fans.
