Kampala, Uganda: Police in Kampala have confirmed that at least three women were severely injured in a sauna explosion that rocked Buziga Country Resort in Makindye Division on Sunday evening.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the blast occurred at around 8:30 pm inside the sauna, triggering smoke, flames, and panic among guests.
The injured victims included Hajjati Mastula, 69, the Vice Chairperson of Katuuso Village, who sustained serious burns on her chest and back, Zahara Nakaweesi suffered burns across her body and a broken leg, while Mamrum Aisha sustained extensive burns.
“All three victims were initially rushed to Kiruddu Hospital for emergency treatment. Two of them were later referred to Nsambya and Mulago Hospitals, respectively, where they are receiving specialized medical attention,” Owoyesigyire stated on Monday morning.
Eyewitnesses reported a loud explosion followed by collapsing structures and debris scattered across the facility, causing part of the sauna structure to collapse while the remaining walls developed cracks. Glass fragments and debris were strewn across the premises, prompting engineers to begin assessments on the safety of the facility.
Preliminary investigations suggest possible technical faults, though the exact cause is yet to be established. Police, fire, and rescue services later cordoned off the site.
“At this stage, no arrests have been made. The scene remains cordoned off for a thorough forensic examination, which is expected to provide more clarity on the cause of the explosion,” Owoyesigyire concluded.
