KOLOLO: Security arrests over 10 as NRM delegates demand elections for Entrepreneurs League

Kampala, Uganda: Tensions flared at Kololo Independence Grounds as disgruntled NRM Entrepreneurs League delegates staged protests before the party’s Electoral Commission chairperson, Dr Tanga Odoi, demanding that their suspended elections be held on Tuesday evening.

The Entrepreneurs League elections had been suspended on Monday following a directive from the National Chairman, President Museveni amid growing allegations of voter bribery and irregularities.

But the disgruntled delegates in their protest on Tuesday said the prolonged delays were becoming costly as the facilitation money they had received for accommodation was running out.

However, security quickly tightened around Kololo, with police and military personnel deployed to restore order. At least 10 delegates were arrested for disrupting the electoral process.

Speaking shortly after the chaos, Dr Tanga assured the youth delegates that their elections would go on as scheduled and outlined the electoral guidelines to be followed for sanity to prevail.

The youth elections, which include positions for NRM Youth League representatives and flag bearers for Youth MPs, were underway by press time amid heavy security deployment at Kololo.
