Kololo, Kampala: Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has been declared winner of the hotly contested race for NRM 2nd National Vice Chairperson (Female), sweeping aside her rival, former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga, with an emphatic victory.
Dr. Tanga Odoi, the NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson, announced the results at 11:14 pm on Tuesday night, declaring Hon Among the winner with 11,680 votes against Kadaga’s 902 votes, out of a total of 12,582 delegates who voted in the lining-up method.
The election, held under the watchful eye of NRM National Chairman, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, drew dramatic scenes as delegates endured the scorching sunshine and hours of noisy chanting while lining behind their candidates in an open show of loyalty.
President Museveni, who personally observed the whole process at Kololo Independence Grounds, is said to have been closely following the outcome, given the strategic importance of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) elections in shaping his ruling party’s direction.
Among’s landslide victory not only solidifies her position within the ruling party’s top organ but also signals a major political blow to Kadaga, who was once seen as Museveni’s most influential female lieutenant within the NRM.
Moments before the final declaration, Kadaga issued a stinging statement on X platform alleging irregularities in the exercise. “I deeply thank everyone who, despite massive voter bribery and intimidation, stood by me. The gross abuse of office witnessed throughout this election is truly unacceptable,” she posted.
“We cherish our party, but if this oppression persists, we shall be left with no choice but to walk away,” Kadaga added, signalling a move to quit the ruling party she has been part of since 1989.
