Cranes legend Denis Onyango back in Cranes as Uganda chases world cup dream

Kampala, Uganda: Ugandan Legendary goalkeeper Denis Masinde Onyango has made a sensational return to the Cranes, four years after announcing his retirement from international football.

Onyango, 40, who plies his trade with South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, was on Tuesday named in Paul Put’s 28-man squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Mozambique and Somalia at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. Uganda currently sits fourth in Group G with nine points.

The former Cranes captain, who guided Uganda to two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) appearances in 2017 and 2019, remains one of the country’s most decorated footballers. In 2016, he was voted African Player of the Year (based in Africa), further cementing his status as one of the continent’s finest shot-stoppers.

Boost for struggling goalkeeping department

Onyango’s return comes at a crucial time, with Uganda’s goalkeeping ranks facing challenges. Isma Watenga is sidelined through injury, while Salim Jamal Omar Magoola is only returning after a long absence.

Coach Paul Put will count on Onyango’s experience and leadership as the Cranes look to revive their qualification hopes.

The Belgian tactician also handed opportunities to young talents Reagan Mpande and Herbert Achayi, who impressed at CHAN 2024. In total, 11 players from the CHAN team have been promoted to the senior side, signaling a blend of experience and youth in the squad.

The Cranes will enter residential camp on 31 August at FUFA Hotel in Kisaasi ahead of the two crucial fixtures. The provisional squad consists of three goalkeepers, ten defenders, five midfielders, and nine forwards.

Onyango had earlier retired in 2021 after Uganda failed to qualify for the 2022 AFCON, but his surprise comeback is expected to inject confidence into both the squad and fans.
