Kololo, Kampala: Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among is set to secure a seat on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC) after delegates overwhelmingly voted her as the party’s 2nd National Vice Chairperson (Female) during the ongoing NRM National Delegates Conference.
Among, who serves as Bukedea District Woman MP and Speaker of the 11th Parliament, was fronted as the preferred candidate for the powerful CEC position that oversees women’s mobilisation at the national level.
Earlier in the day, the two fierce political lynchpins faced off as they both gave their speech before the President and the delegates, with Kadaga accusing Among of gross voter bribery of delegates.
The elections, presided over at Kololo Independence Grounds on Tuesday by NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr Tanga Odoi under the watchful eye of the President, saw thousands of NRM delegates casting their votes to fill key CEC slots as part of the party’s leadership renewal process.
The 2nd National Vice Chairperson (Female) is a strategic post that positions Hon Among at the heart of the ruling party’s decision-making organ.
Her elevation is viewed as a consolidation of her political influence both in Parliament and within the ruling party structure, marking her rise as one of the most powerful female politicians in the NRM, especially with her background as a former opposition stalwart under the now-powerless Forum for Democratic Change (FDC)
