Mbale High student arrested over murder of schoolmate

Akram Kairoki, a Senior Three student at Mbale High School, is being accused of murdering his schoolmate.

Mbale City, Uganda: Police in Mbale City have arrested a Senior Three student of Mbale High School, identified as Akram Kairoki, over the alleged murder of his schoolmate, Shafik Wasike, a Senior Four candidate.

The tragic incident happened recently at Amber Stores in the Indian Quarters, Mbale City, where the students reportedly picked a fight after being released from school. Kairoki is said to have stabbed Wasike with a sharp object, leaving him critically injured.

Wasike, 19, was rushed to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital by three colleagues but was pronounced dead moments later.

Elgon Region Police Spokesperson Rogers Taitika confirmed the arrest, noting that Kairoki was tracked down after an extensive manhunt.

“Our team has been tracing him in several areas of Busoga and Buganda, but we finally got him in Nakwigalo Cell, Busulwe Town Council, Butaleja District. He is now in custody at Mbale City Police and will soon be arraigned before court,” Taitika said.

He applauded community members for providing leads that helped police track down the suspect, urging students to remain disciplined and focused on education instead of engaging in violent acts.

“As police, we want to remind students that anyone above 12 years can be paraded in court to answer for criminal charges,” Taitika cautioned.

The late Wasike, a resident of Bujoloto in Nkoma Ward, Mbale City, was laid to rest at his ancestral home in Kabwagasi Town Council. His death has left the school community and his family in shock.
