Kololo, Kampala: The contest for NRM Central Region Vice Chairperson took a dramatic turn after candidates Joseph Ssewava, Kiwanda Godfrey Suubi and Hakim Kyeswa bowed out of the race, declaring their support for Kyotera County MP and State Minister for Microfinance Hon. Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo.
The withdrawals, announced Tuesday during the NRM National Delegates Conference at Kololo, effectively reposition Kasolo as a strong favourite in the race. He now faces Kaliisa Kalangwa Moses, the Kayunga District NRM Chairperson, the closest rival for the seat.
Party insiders suggest the real showdown will be between Kasolo and Kalangwa. However, Kalangwa’s candidacy is already under pressure, with a section of delegates, particularly from Kayunga and Mukono, accusing him of land grabbing and misuse of his influence in district matters.
In their joint statement, the trio former aspirants rallied delegates to unite behind Kasolo, saying his track record and loyalty to President Museveni made him the “natural choice” to steer the region at CEC level.

Kasolo welcomed the endorsement, saying: “I am humbled by the confidence of my colleagues. This is not about individual ambition but about strengthening the NRM in the Central region and ensuring our party remains united as we prepare for 2026 and beyond.”
The NRM Delegates Conference is expected to vote later today to decide who takes up the influential slot on the ruling party’s top organ.
