Kololo, Kampala: Former Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga has threatened to quit the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) after suffering a humiliating defeat to Speaker Anita Annet Among in the race for the powerful position of 2nd National Vice Chairperson (Female).

Kadaga, who managed only 902 votes (7.2%) against Among’s overwhelming 11,680 (92.8%) out of 12,582 total votes, described the election as one marred by “massive voter bribery and intimidation,” accusing top officials of abusing office to tilt the outcome.

Moments before the official declaration by NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi, Kadaga issued a strongly worded statement on X platform, warning that the party risks losing its moral ground if such practices persist.

“I deeply thank everyone who, despite massive voter bribery and intimidation, stood by me. The gross abuse of office witnessed throughout this election is truly unacceptable,” Kadaga said, adding, “We cherish our party, but if this oppression persists, we shall be left with no choice but to walk away.”

Her remarks, if true from the X account, have already sparked fresh speculation over a possible fallout within the party’s top leadership, with observers noting that Kadaga’s defeat could signal the end of her long-standing influence in the NRM’s Central Executive Committee (CEC).

President Museveni personally witnessed the election at Kololo Independence Grounds, where delegates lined behind candidates to cast their choice in the heated contest.
