Senegal beat Sudan on penalties to claim CHAN 2024 bronze

Senegal players celebrate with their bronze medals after edging Sudan 4-2 on penalties at Mandela National Stadium in Kampala.

Kampala, Uganda: The Teranga Lions of Senegal Friday secured third place at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 after overcoming Sudan 4-2 on penalties, following a tense 1-1 draw at Mandela National Stadium in Kampala.

Sudan got off to a dream start when Mohamed Tia Asad rose high to head home Abdel Raouf Yagoub’s corner in the 6th minute. They maintained their lead until halftime, with goalkeeper Mohamed Abooja pulling off crucial saves to deny Senegal.

The reigning champions, however, drew level in the 58th minute through Seyni Mbaye Ndiaye, who nodded in after a precise cross from Ousseynou Seck. From then, Senegal took control of possession, but Sudan remained a threat on the break.

With no extra time allowed in the third-place play-off, Ugandan referee Shamilah Nabadda signaled penalties at full time. Sudan cracked under pressure as Walieldin Khdir missed the first spot-kick and Musab Makeen had his effort saved by Senegal’s goalkeeper Marc Diouf.

Senegal kept their nerve, with Joseph Layousse, Issa Kane, Vieux Cissé, and Libasse Guèye all converting to seal a 4-2 shootout victory and the bronze medal.

The award ceremony was presided over by CAF vice president, members of the executive committee, Uganda’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, and FUFA president Moses Magogo.

Senegal’s triumph came as a consolation after their semi-final exit to Morocco on penalties. They now finish on the podium, while Sudan are left to reflect on what might have been.

The CHAN 2024 tournament wraps up on Saturday, August 30, with the final in Nairobi, where Morocco face Madagascar at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani.
