Kibuku, Uganda: Authorities in eastern Uganda’s Kibuku District are investigating the death of 30-year-old fisherman, Minjo Yokana, who drowned in River Mpologoma in the early hours of Saturday morning after his boat capsized during a fishing expedition.

The incident, reported to Kibuku Police Station by Kyenyi John, the LC1 Chairperson of Nansonko Cell in Bugiri Parish, occurred around 3:00 AM when Yokana and his colleague, Matono Godfrey, were pulling in fishing nets.

According to eyewitnesses, a sudden, strong wave struck their boat, causing it to overturn. Matono managed to swim to safety, while Yokana was swept away by the river’s current. His body was later retrieved by relatives, who transported it to an undisclosed location before alerting the Kasasira Police Post.

Police registered the drowning case under reference number Kasasira SD 03/30/08/25 and visited the scene to gather statements from the survivor and Yokana’s relatives.

However, Bukedi North Police PRO ASP Kyempasa Wilfred confirmed that the body was not recovered at the accident site and no postmortem was conducted.

Authorities have since urged local fishermen to take extra precautions and remain alert to sudden weather changes that could endanger lives on the water.
