Kampala, Uganda: The Global Institute of Information Technology and Business Makerere has received state-of-the-art equipment from the Uganda Refugee Employment Promotion Project (UREPP) to boost its vocational skilling programs and produce hands-on graduates ready for the demands of the modern job market.
The equipment, delivered on Thursday, August 28, 2025, was handed over at the office of the institute’s director, Mr. Ben Opolot. The partnership also included a student profiling session for more than 100 first-year learners ahead of the September 2025 intake, aimed at guiding students into programs aligned with their natural abilities and career aspirations.
UREPP, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), implements vocational and entrepreneurship programs in training institutions across Uganda, with a focus on empowering youth, women, and refugees. “We want to empower youth, especially women and refugees, to engage in vocational training and build their future on it,” a UREPP official said at the ceremony.
Speaking during the handover, UREPP Project Manager Mr. Joshua Kunya stressed the importance of profiling in addressing common challenges faced by students. “Many students choose training programs due to societal, family, or peer pressure, which often leads to poor outcomes such as dropping out, dissatisfaction, or unemployment. Profiling bridges this gap by matching students’ interests and abilities with the right programs,” he noted.
The Director, Mr. Opolot, welcomed the donation, describing it as a timely boost to the institute’s mission. “This equipment will enable us to fulfill our mandate of empowering young people and Ugandans at large with employable skills,” he said.
He emphasized that innovation and technical skilling remain critical to Uganda’s economic growth and transition to middle-income status.
