Kampala, Uganda: The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Tribunal has annulled Kaweesa Mahad’s victory as the party’s flag bearer for Kampala Lord Mayor race, and declared Kizito Moses Nsubuga as the ruling party’s candidate ahead for the 2026 general elections.
The tribunal ruling follows a petition by Kizito, who challenged Mahad’s victory, citing alleged forgery of academic documents, a series of electoral malpractices on the polling day, voter bribery, and intimidation, most of which the tribunal found merit, leading to the reversal of his declaration.
Speaking after receiving the tribunal’s ruling, Kizito Moses expressed gratitude to the party structures and pledged to uphold the values of the NRM while campaigning for Kampala residents.
This decision comes after DailyExpress last week published a report on delays in the tribunal’s ruling, which had left the Kampala Lord Mayor race uncertain for the ruling party’s true candidate yet the dates were ticking by.
The Electoral Commission has set September 3rd to 5th as the date for the nomination of candidates for District/City Chairpersons, Lord Mayor, and Councillors, including Special Interest Groups (SIGs) for all parties and independents.
With the victorious ruling, Kizito Moses Nsubuga is now positioned to contest against incumbent Erias Lukwago (who has held the position over the last three decades), seeking to extend his reign, the National Unity Platform (NUP)’s Eng Ronald Balimwezo, Democratic Party’s Beatrice Mao (wife to DP President and Minister Nobert Mao, among others in the race for the Kampala Lord Mayor seat come 2026.
