Kampala, Uganda: The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially unveiled the nomination timetable for Uganda’s 2025–2026 general elections, setting September 3–24, 2025, as the window for local government aspirants at various levels to secure their place on the ballot.

According to the released roadmap, nominations for district and city chairpersons, along with councillors at both levels, will run from September 3 to 5 at the respective district electoral offices where candidates intend to contest.

The process will then move to municipality and division chairpersons and councillors between September 8 and 10, followed by nominations for municipal division chairpersons, sub-county chairpersons, and town council councillors from September 11 to 24.

The Electoral Commission Public Relations Officer, Mr Julius Musinguzi, emphasised that nominations are a crucial step in the democratic process. “To be nominated is the start to be elected as a leader. You must first qualify through selection before you can appear on the ballot as a candidate,” he said.

Candidates who complete the nomination process successfully will feature on ballot papers and subsequently campaign ahead of polling, which is scheduled between January 12 and February 9, 2026, with exact polling days to be communicated later.

Regarding independent candidates, Musinguzi revealed that election symbols have already been published in the Government Gazette and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Candidates sponsored by political parties will appear under their respective party symbols.

The Commission has also issued strict guidelines for nominations, limiting each aspirant to only two supporters. “Only three people, the candidate and two supporters, will be allowed at nomination centres,” Musinguzi stressed, urging aspirants to avoid crowding and disruptions at electoral offices.

The EC appealed to all candidates and political parties to carefully follow the nomination schedule and adhere to the set regulations to ensure a transparent and orderly process.
