Buganda Kingdom Mourns passing of police chief Musa Walugembe

Mourners have described ASP Musa Walugembe, a Buganda royal and SIU officer, as a humble and patriotic servant of the nation.

Kampala, Uganda: Shock and grief have engulfed the Buganda Kingdom and Uganda’s security circles following the sudden death of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Moses Walugembe, a distinguished officer attached to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in Kireka.

Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs, Hon. Balaam Barugahara Ateeyi, confirmed the development on Wednesday morning via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, describing Walugembe as a patriotic and committed officer.

“My heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and the entire Buganda Kingdom upon the passing of ASP Musa Walugembe. He was a dedicated officer at the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) Kireka,” Minister Balaam wrote.

ASP Walugembe’s passing is not only a blow to the police force but also to the Buganda Kingdom, where he hailed from a prominent royal lineage. His mother is a known Princess from Buganda, while his father was son to Prince Sulaiman Kiweewa of the Buganda royal family.

Family sources revealed that his death resonates deeply within the Kingdom, as his bloodline links directly to the throne.

At the time of his death, Walugembe was serving in the SIU, a unit mandated to investigate high-profile and complex cases — a testament to his professionalism and competence.

By press time, the cause of his death remained unclear, with police and family yet to release an official statement. Nonetheless, his passing has already triggered an outpouring of grief and tributes from colleagues, friends, and Buganda Kingdom loyalists who remembered him as a humble and trustworthy officer.

Preparations for his burial are underway, with consultations ongoing between the family and Buganda Kingdom officials to ensure that cultural and traditional protocols are duly observed.
