Arua, Uganda: The Minister of State for Disaster Preparedness, Refugees and Relief, Hon. Lillian Aber, has officially handed over a newly completed water system in Ajia Sub-County, Arua District, constructed by the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) and partners, to Arua District Local Government.
The piped water system, designed to serve over 3,100 people across six villages, will also provide safe water to Ayayia Health Center II, Ayaa Primary School, and Ayayia Primary School, institutions that have long struggled with limited access to clean and safe water.
Hon. Aber commended the Uganda Red Cross Society, the Netherlands Red Cross, Arua District leadership, and local communities for their commitment to the project, urging residents to embrace ownership and sustainability.
“Let us all work together to ensure sustainability through ownership, responsible use, and routine maintenance. Special thanks to the Government of Uganda for prioritizing last-mile service delivery and supporting transformative projects like this, especially H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the Office of the Prime Minister,” she said.

The project is expected to significantly reduce waterborne disease risks, improve hygiene standards, and strengthen resilience against climate-induced water challenges in the region.
According to URCS, the initiative is part of broader efforts to align with Uganda’s Vision 2040 and Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) on universal access to clean water and sanitation.
