Kamuli, Uganda: Teachers in Kamuli and Buyende districts have been urged to join the newly launched Uganda Liberal Teachers Union (ULITU), a move aimed at improving their welfare and access to government-backed financial support.
Mr. Kokye Andrew, Chairman of the ULITU Members SACCO, said the union and SACCO have been introduced locally to ensure teachers benefit from the grant provided by President Museveni at a 10 percent annual interest rate.
He encouraged teachers to also engage in income-generating activities such as agriculture to enhance their financial stability.
Explaining the distinction between ULITU and the Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU), Mr. Kokye said, “ULITU deals directly with teachers. We want to ensure every teacher benefits from the SACCO and enjoys peace of mind, which ultimately allows them to teach without disturbances.”
Mr. Mulunji John, ULITU SACCO Manager, added that the union will provide low-interest loans to help teachers start projects and improve their livelihoods.
The launch event at Tigs Hotel in Kamuli municipality attracted over 200 teachers, many of whom expressed relief at an alternative to moneylenders and other high-interest financial institutions.
ULITU, headquartered in Ntinda, Kampala, is now opening branches nationwide. Membership is open to all teachers, whether in government or private schools.
