Iganga, Uganda: The Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, Dr. Tanga Odoi, has confirmed that fresh elections will be conducted this Monday, September 8, 2025, in several areas where the party’s election disputes tribunal ordered reruns.

Speaking during a press conference at Mum Resort Hotel in Iganga on Saturday, Dr. Tanga clarified that the affected constituencies currently have no flag bearers and that the reruns are aimed at determining legitimate winners.

The elections will be conducted in Buyende District to determine the Woman MP flag bearer across 56 villages, in 4 villages in Namayingo South Constituency, and in Namutumba District where Bukono Constituency will have reruns in 76 villages (30 in Kibaale Town Council and 46 in Kibaale Sub County).

Other affected areas include 14 villages in Kigulu South (Iganga), 6 villages in Rubabo County (Rukungiri), 7 villages in Ntungamo Municipality, Soroti City West Division (Mayor), and Nagongera Town Council (Woman Councilor).

“The order by the tribunal is irreversible. We must hold elections in those areas and for the avoidance of doubt, there are no flag bearers there until elections are concluded,” Dr. Tanga stressed.

He dismissed claims by some candidates, including in Kigulu South where Ntulume Yusuf Kyafu presented a document declaring him flag bearer, explaining that such documents were signed before the tribunal’s ruling. “Any candidate who thinks there is something signed by Dr. Tanga, it is the same Dr. Tanga cancelling it because the tribunal has taken over,” he said.

Dr. Tanga also emphasized that only voters appearing in the official NRM register will be allowed to cast their ballots, warning against attempts to sidestep party registers. He further called for peace during the exercise, cautioning security personnel to respect the independence of the electoral process and avoid interference.

DailyExpress understands that the Inspector General of Police has instructed AIGP Moses Kafeero to command security in all areas where elections will be held, with district police commanders taking instructions from him. The EC has also dispatched headquarters staff to oversee specific areas.

Dr. Tanga warned the Namutumba DPC against interfering in the process, citing reports that he had visited candidates’ homes and threatened arrests. “That should not be done, the commission is in charge, and that is the only job they have,” Tanga said.
