Uganda launches Climate Change Awareness Marathon ahead of World Car-Free Day

Youth leaders and organizers launch the Third Climate Change Awareness Marathon at Parliament, ahead of the September 22 run at Makerere Freedom Square.

Kampala, Uganda: Uganda’s youth have placed themselves at the center of climate action with the launch of the Third Climate Change Awareness Marathon, an event set for Monday, September 22, 2025, at Makerere Freedom Square.

Organized by the Africa Tourism and Environment Initiatives (ATEI), the marathon is more than a sporting event; it is a rallying call for collective environmental responsibility, timed to coincide with World Car-Free Day.

The marathon was launched at Parliament following a high-level session of the Environment Parliament, where youth leaders made a strong case for shifting from debate to practical action. “The Environment Parliament is not just a forum of talk but of action,” said Belinda Amanya, who presided over the session.

Maureen Nabule, Miss Climate Change (Central Uganda), added her voice, calling on peers to lead by example. “As youth ambassadors for climate action, we must innovate, run, and build a greener Uganda,” she said.

ATEI’s Team Lead, Bismac Amumpaire, stressed that climate change is not a distant threat but an urgent crisis, pointing to rising air pollution in Kampala. He noted that over 987 Ugandans die annually from climate-related complications, a figure that underscores the need for immediate interventions.

This year’s marathon will serve a dual purpose: raising awareness and mobilizing funds. Proceeds will support climate resilience projects in Karamoja, one of Uganda’s most climate-vulnerable regions, and expand awareness campaigns across the country.

Running under the theme “Running for a Green Future: Youth Innovation & Action for Climate Justice,” the marathon will also host a Green Expo to showcase sustainable innovations. Registration kits are available at UGX 25,000, exhibition stalls at UGX 50,000, while sponsorship packages range from UGX 1.5 million (Gold) to UGX 2.5 million (Platinum).

The organizers say the marathon demonstrates how everyday actions — like running — can be transformed into movements that inspire systemic change.
