Bamasaaba urged to embrace traditional dialogue for resolving cultural disputes

Deputy Chief Justice Dr. Flavian Zeija shares a moment with Steven Masiga, spokesperson of the Bamasaaba Cultural Institution, at a past event

Mbale City, Uganda: The Deputy Chief Justice of Uganda, His Lordship Dr. Flavian Zeija, has urged the Bamasaaba and other cultural institutions across the country to embrace culturally tested methods of resolving disputes rather than turning every conflict into a court case.

Speaking during the opening of a Court of Appeal session in Mbale City on Monday, Dr. Zeija highlighted the importance of alternative dispute resolution (ADR), noting that cultural wrangles can often be addressed through traditional dialogue, mediation, and reconciliation, mechanisms that not only save time but also preserve unity within communities.

“The cultural institutions must realize that not every disagreement should end up in litigation. We encourage dialogue, mediation, and other culturally tested ways of settling issues that safeguard the identity and cohesion of our people,” the Deputy Chief Justice said.

The Court of Appeal recently rolled out regional circuits to bring justice services closer to the people, starting with Bugisu, Gulu, and Mbarara. The move is part of a broader judicial reform aimed at reducing case backlog and ensuring access to justice across Uganda.

Mr. Steven Masiga, the spokesperson of the Bamasaaba Cultural Institution, welcomed the Deputy Chief Justice’s counsel, describing it as timely guidance at a moment when cultural institutions face internal leadership disputes.

“I salute you, my Lord, for this wise counsel. I will amplify this message across our Bukuka media platforms and ensure that Umukuka III, together with our clan chairpersons, internalizes it for the good of the institution,” Masiga said.

The event attracted key regional and national figures, including Mbale City RCC Hon. Wopuwa George, the Elgon Regional Police Commander, CID Elgon officials, the Bukuka Town Clerk, Mbale City OC Prisons, and the RPC Bukedi Region, among others.
