Kampala, Uganda: Uganda officially opened the 63rd Session of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) at Speke Resort Munyonyo on Monday, reaffirming the East African nation’s growing diplomatic influence in global legal and multilateral affairs.

Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, who represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, welcomed delegates from the 49 member states to the second AALCO session hosted in Uganda, the first having been in 1993.

In her keynote address, Speaker Among described the meeting as a “gathering of custodians of a shared vision rooted in solidarity, equality, and the transformative power of international law,” stressing that the spirit of Bandung, which birthed the organization in 1956, still guides its work today.

She pointed to the world’s pressing challenges, including climate change, conflicts, economic inequalities, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity, and called for stronger Asian and African voices in shaping international law rather than being passive recipients of frameworks dictated elsewhere.

Among outlined four pillars that should define AALCO’s next chapter: strengthening member engagement, enhancing legal capacity among states, promoting inclusivity in global governance, and addressing emerging issues through forward-looking frameworks.

“The challenges before us are daunting, but AALCO is uniquely positioned to ensure that Asia and Africa are not merely reacting to global developments but actively shaping them,” she said.

The session, attended by legal experts, diplomats, and senior government officials from across the two continents, will run under the theme of renewing the Bandung Spirit and charting a path toward a more just and equitable international legal order.
