Bobi Wine: Only official party flagbearers will get NUP support in 2026 elections

Kampala, Uganda: The Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, has warned that the party will only rally behind its official flagbearers, not independents, in the run-up to the 2026 general elections.

Speaking at the party headquarters in Makerere Kavule on Thursday, September 11, Bobi Wine emphasized that NUP’s strength lies in discipline and unity around chosen candidates. “Our support shall only be given to those unveiled as our official flagbearers rather than independents,” he said, stressing that members must avoid divisions that weaken the party’s influence at the ballot.

The NUP Principal praised aspirants who conceded defeat in recent internal processes and pledged support for the chosen flagbearers. “Conceding is not a sign of weakness but rather a gesture of respect for the party,” he noted.

At the same presser, the NUP Elections Management Committee (EMC) announced a week-long vetting exercise for parliamentary aspirants, scheduled for September 15–21, 2025. The committee urged aspirants to prepare all required documentation, including academic papers and party membership cards, to avoid setbacks during the process.

The Committee Chairperson, Ms Harriet Chemutai, however, accused the Uganda Electoral Commission of frustrating NUP candidates during recent local government nominations.

“Some of our candidates were deliberately denied nomination under claims of missing requirements,” she said, warning that the party will not tolerate similar disruptions in the parliamentary exercise.

The press briefing also marked the official dispatch of NUP flagbearers for local government positions in Kampala District, where Kyagulanyi called on supporters to “entrust their mandate” to those carrying the umbrella symbol.
