Kampala, Uganda: The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Aspirant for the Youth League Chairperson seat, Ms. Brenda Kiconco, has welcomed with open arms the ruling by the NRM Electoral Disputes Tribunal that nullified the recently concluded elections, calling it a landmark victory for fairness and internal democracy within the ruling party.

The Tribunal’s decision followed petitions lodged by Kiconco and two other candidates, challenging the credibility of the August 27 elections, which had declared Collins Tanga, son of NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr Tanga Odoi, as the winner.

In the consolidated petition, the aspirants cited irregularities, including manipulation, conflict of interest, and voter suppression, arguing that the process undermined the party’s democratic values, which the Tribunal panel, headed by Counsel John Musiime, based on to annul the declaration and order a fresh poll.

Reacting to the development, Ms Kiconco, who is also the National Youth Council Secretary for Female Affairs, said the judgment was not only a personal vindication but also a win for the NRM Youth League and the wider party structures.

“The ruling affirms that internal democracy is alive within our Movement and that grievances can be resolved without undermining unity,” she said in the official statement released on Tuesday, September 09, 2025.

The NRM Youth League seat aspirant added that the rerun should be viewed as an opportunity to reaffirm the shared vision of a disciplined, vibrant, and ideologically grounded youth wing and urged supporters across the country to remain steadfast, peaceful, and united ahead of the new election date, which is yet to be announced.

“Our rerun is not just about my leadership but about strengthening the NRM Youth League as a foundation for continuity, stability, and transformation,” Kiconco emphasized.

She also extended gratitude to her supporters for their resilience during what she described as a challenging period, promising to continue championing integrity, humility, and dedication in her campaign.

“To my esteemed supporters across the country, I sincerely thank you for the unwavering trust, backing, and prayers you have shown during this challenging period. Your resilience inspires me daily. Let us embrace this new opportunity with hope and renewed energy. I remain committed to serving you with integrity, humility, and dedication,” she said.

“As we await the announcement of a new date for the rerun, let us approach this process peacefully and with respect for one another. Together, we shall show the nation that the NRM Youth League is the bedrock of continuity, stability, and transformation for generations to come.”

The NRM Youth League elections have, in recent years, attracted controversy due to their strategic importance in shaping the party’s next generation of leaders. The rerun, whose date is yet to be announced, is expected to draw keen attention both within and outside the Movement party.
