Three NRM-leaning independents among eight cleared for Kamuli Mayoral Race

Kamuli, Uganda: The Electoral Commission has cleared eight candidates to contest in the Kamuli Municipal Council mayoral race, with three independents breaking ranks from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

NRM’s official flag bearer is Mr. Fred Balinango, but three other NRM members; Mr. Denis Kagabo, Mr. David Musasisi, and Mr. Michael Kiboome Ndiko, rejected the party’s internal election process and opted to run as independents.

The opposition has also fielded three candidates: Mr. Twahiri Waiswa (NUP), Mr. Peter Kaluuba (FDC), and Mr. Hamis Kwagala, a NUP member running as an independent after being denied the party ticket.

Mr. Fred Isabirye, the opposition coordinator, hailed the nomination process, noting that five of the eight candidates are opposition-leaning. He said this indicates a shifting political tide in Kamuli.

“Out of the eight nominated for the mayoral race, the opposition has five well-grounded candidates, and we are building our takeover from lower local councils,” Isabirye said.

Kamuli EC Returning Officer Mr. Kenneth Kayabwe, urged candidates to remain patient until the official campaign flag-off after the harmonization of programs.

“You are now under the Electoral Commission, so you must abide by the rules and regulations of elections,” Kayabwe cautioned.

The campaigns are expected to revolve around youth unemployment, service delivery, and urban development in Kamuli Municipality.
