Kampala, Uganda: The Republic of Uganda and China have taken a step forward in strengthening bilateral economic ties, with a high-level delegation of Chinese investors visiting Uganda under the facilitation of H.E. Ambassador Oliver Wonekha and the Embassy of the Republic of Uganda in Beijing.
The engagement follows the recently concluded Annual Ambassadors’ Retreat in Gulu, where envoys reaffirmed their mandate to position Uganda as a competitive global investment destination. The Beijing mission has been instrumental in mobilizing Chinese enterprises keen on exploring opportunities in Uganda’s priority sectors.
Representing the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), Mr. Peter Muramira outlined key sectors open for investment, including agriculture, manufacturing, oil and gas, infrastructure, and industrial park development. He also emphasized renewable energy projects such as bamboo plantations and processing, along with technical training and scholarships aimed at building a skilled workforce.
Muramira acknowledged Uganda’s trade imbalance with China but cited progress, revealing that Uganda’s exports to China rose by 127% between February 2024 and February 2025. “This growth reflects Uganda’s expanding export potential and our government’s commitment to diversifying trade,” he noted.
The Chinese delegation, led by Mr. Diao Chunhe, Chairman of the Alliance of Chinese Business in Africa for Social Responsibilities, praised Uganda’s business climate and reaffirmed China’s readiness to expand cooperation.
“Uganda’s recognition as the Best Investment Destination in Africa 2024, alongside its record $3.034 billion in foreign direct investment, proves the country’s strong credentials,” he said, pointing to landmark projects including the Karuma Hydropower Plant, Buikwe Water Supply Project, and backbone communication networks as evidence of successful China-Uganda partnerships.
Representing the Chinese Embassy in Uganda, Mr. Wang Jianxun, Economic and Commercial Counsellor, congratulated both sides on their progress and reaffirmed China’s commitment to encouraging responsible enterprises to invest.
“China and Uganda share a historic friendship dating back to 1962. We are committed to partnerships that advance industrial cooperation, technology transfer, and shared prosperity,” Wang said.
Uganda, pursuing Vision 2040 and the Fourth National Development Plan, continues to prioritize agriculture, energy, digital transformation, and industrialization. Officials emphasized that the country remains open to partnerships that drive economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development.
