Lira City, Uganda: The Territorial Police in Lira City have arrested 31 suspects in a nighttime intelligence-led operation targeting criminal hideouts across several parts of the city.
The joint operation, conducted on the night of Friday, September 12, 2025, covered Kitgum Stage, Lira Taxi Park, Camp Swahili, Ipito Aweno (Pipe), and the surroundings of Lira Main Market.
According to SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Public Relations Officer for the North Kyoga Region, the suspects were found in possession of housebreaking implements, dangerous weapons believed to be used in robberies, and illegal substances, including opium and aviation fuel.
“All suspects are currently detained at Lira CPS. Screening is ongoing, and investigations will determine who among them will be formally charged,” SP Okema said. He added that the operation is part of an ongoing campaign to disrupt criminal gangs in the city.
“This is one of the mop-up operations that police will continue, not only within Lira City but also across other districts in the North Kyoga Region, as part of our strategy to build a crime-free society,” he told DailyExpress.
