Sheema, Uganda: The race for Sheema South Member of Parliament seat just gained fresh momentum yet again after a latest online poll portrayed the NRM flag bearer, Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, leading incumbent MP Prof. Elijah Mushemeza and independent candidate Tomson Bandiho by far, signaling a continued shift in voter preference ahead of the 2026 general elections.
According to poll results seen by DailyExpress, out of the 78 participants who voted on the Sheema South WhatsApp platform, Prof. Kamuntu, 79, received 46 votes (58.9%), Prof. Mushemeza, 61, trailed with 13 votes (16.67%), while Bandiho secured 19 votes (24.43%).
It should be recalled that Prof. Kamuntu secured the NRM nomination after defeating his political arch-rival, Mushemeza, in the July 17 primaries, ending years of intense rivalry between the two seasoned legislators, and observers suggest that the latest poll simply reflects a growing base for Kamuntu among party supporters and constituents.

Mushemeza’s camp, however, urged caution regarding the poll, emphasizing its limited scope. “While online polls shed some insight, they cannot fully represent the constituency’s views. The people of Sheema South will make their choice at the ballot,” remarked a close associate of the incumbent.
Sheema South has traditionally been a competitive constituency, often defined by contests between established figures and emerging political voices.
Seasoned political analysts say Kamuntu’s current standing, if the polls are to go by, positions him as a frontrunner for the parliamentary race.
Prof Mushemeza, having lost the flag to his rival Kamuntu, is poised to return with another bid to defend his seat, this time as an independent candidate, when the Electoral Commission begins nominations for parliamentary aspirants.
