Water Aid Uganda launches hygiene behaviour change campaign in Kamuli

Kamuli, Uganda: Water Aid Uganda, a Non-profit organization focused on ensuring equitable access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene education (WASH), has launched a new hygiene behaviour change campaign in Kamuli District aimed at improving access to safe water, sanitation, and healthier living conditions for communities.

The campaign is being rolled out in Balawoli Town Council and Wankole Sub County, where a safe water project will be established to ensure clean water access.

Mrs. Alice Apolot, the Water Aid project officer in Kamuli, said the two areas were selected following a needs assessment, which highlighted acute gaps in water and sanitation services.

“In Lulyambuzi, Wankole Sub-County, we noted the need for improved sanitation and hygiene. Particularly in Balawoli Town Council, the population is growing, and as a trading centre, the extension of the water supply system will help the community greatly,” Apolot explained.

Ahead of the project’s rollout, Water Aid has trained village health teams, parish chiefs, local council leaders, councillors, and youth leaders as committee members to spearhead implementation across nine beneficiary villages.

Apolot added that the campaign is part of Water Aid’s broader mission to ensure every Ugandan has access to safe and clean water. “As Water Aid Uganda, we want to see a Uganda where everyone enjoys access to safe water, hygiene, and sanitation,” she said.

The project will also construct a boys’ latrine at Balawoli Primary School and install an incinerator and ash pit at Balawoli Health Centre to improve sanitation services.

“We want mothers delivering at the Health Centre to benefit from proper waste management systems, especially through the incinerator which will support maternity waste disposal,” Apolot noted.

Kamuli District Health Inspector, Dr. Munyete Abdullah, urged residents to take full ownership of the initiative. “This project is good for our community. We ask residents to embrace it and maintain sanitation and hygiene,” he said.

Presiding over the launch, Kamuli RDC Rose Birungi thanked Water Aid Uganda for the intervention and appealed to the community to put the facilities to proper use.

The project will directly benefit seven villages in Balawoli Town Council and two villages in Wankole Sub-County, Lulyambuzi Parish.
