Iganga, Uganda: National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders in Iganga Municipality have pledged support to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the party’s flag bearer for Member of Parliament, Hajji Swaibu Ojasi, ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The leaders, led by Iganga Municipality NRM chairperson Sajjabi Abasa alias Obama, made the commitment during a meeting at Ojasi’s home in Bulubandi, where they unveiled campaign posters for both Museveni and Ojasi.

NRM Electoral Commission registrar for Iganga district, Mr. Kirunda Yazid, formally presented Ojasi as the duly elected party flag bearer to the leadership.

“We should not go contrary to party rules. Of recent, I have seen flag bearers escorting independents for nominations, which is not good. We need to ignore the past internal elections and focus on 2026. Some people were affected, but it’s not too late to reconcile,” said Sajjabi, calling for unity among NRM flag bearers.

Sajjabi further urged aspirants to prioritize campaigning for President Museveni before rallying support for themselves, advising that their posters should feature the President’s portrait.

Iganga Central Division chairperson Kasimba Abubakar issued a stern warning against internal sabotage, saying: “I want to make it clear that I will not sit back and watch when you’re fighting me. Previously, I kept quiet, but this time I will have to fight back.”

Registrar Kirunda warned leaders against hypocrisy, which he said had undermined internal cohesion. “It is better if you tell a contestant the truth than deceive them. Many of you have been victims of hypocrisy. I advise all contestants to spend wisely and sparingly,” he said, stressing that leaders must target voters disillusioned by malpractices during primaries.

In his address, Hajj Ojasi appealed for reconciliation and collective effort in order to secure victory for the NRM in 2026.

“During the primaries, I could have stepped on some of you, but I ask for forgiveness. As the endorsed card bearer, I also call for unity and reconciliation because many were the inequities within the party during primaries. We can move ahead when we work as a team,” Ojasi said.
