Namisindwa, Uganda: Residents of Mukoto Sub-county have applauded district leaders after the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) withdrew its contested site from Maalo Parish, ending a decade-long land dispute that had unsettled communities.
Masika David Nasimolo, one of the affected residents, said locals had suffered under unresolved court cases and harassment from UWA officials.
“We have endured more than 10 years of pain, but today we feel relieved. I thank our leaders, especially the NRM flagbearer, for standing with us,” Masika said, urging government to prioritize the settlement of boundary disputes.
Another resident, Nasimolo Patrick of Bunsmulunyi, commended Bwayo Emma for consistently following up on court proceedings. “Emma has always listened to us and even raised the matter before the President, which gives us hope that justice will finally prevail,” he said.
Namulunyi Patrick also recounted cases of harassment by UWA officers, accusing them of framing residents with false charges. He reminded authorities that President Museveni had already affirmed the 2010 boundary marks as valid and insisted they must be respected.
Responding to the residents, Bwayo Emma, the NRM LCV flagbearer for Namisindwa, reaffirmed government’s commitment to protecting people and their property. He called for peaceful co-existence between UWA and the surrounding communities.
“The people deserve justice. I will continue to push for residents living near the park to meet the President and present their grievances directly,” Emma said.
