Bobi Wine’s push into 2026: Unity, battles, and big stakes ahead for NUP

By Sibuta Kenneth Weswa

Kampala, Uganda: The Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, has intensified preparations for the 2026 General Elections by consolidating party control, rallying grassroots mobilization, and countering internal dissent.

Mr Wine confirmed that NUP had submitted more than the required number of nomination signatures to the Electoral Commission, sealing his candidature for the presidency. Party leaders say this milestone reflects strong grassroots structures and the resilience of supporters despite what they describe as a hostile political environment.

While unveiling the party’s 2026 roadmap recently at Kavule, Kyagulanyi warned that only official NUP flagbearers will receive party support, cautioning aspirants against contesting as independents. “We cannot afford divided loyalties if we are to challenge the regime effectively. Discipline and unity are key,” he said.

The decision has sparked tension within NUP ranks, with some aspirants accusing the leadership of sidelining them. Former Kawempe North MP Latif Ssebagala, who is contesting independently, declared his continued support for Bobi Wine’s presidency despite running outside the party structures.

Beyond campaigns, Kyagulanyi recently hosted Moses Nkonge Kibalama, the founding leader of what evolved into NUP, who is recovering from illness at his home in Magere, Wakiso. The move was widely seen as a gesture of respect to party elders.

On the international front, Bobi Wine has been actively engaging the diaspora. During his address in London, he urged Ugandans abroad to stay involved in the struggle for change, saying their contribution was vital in keeping global attention on Uganda’s political developments.

Analysts say NUP’s growing organizational strength is evident in its ability to mobilize signatures and resources, but internal disagreements over candidate selection and looming government pushback remain the biggest hurdles ahead of the 2026 polls.
