Dr Atingi-Ego ranked among World’s top 25 Central Bank Governors

Entebbe, Uganda: Bank of Uganda (BoU) Governor, Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego, has been named among the world’s top 25 best-performing central bank governors in 2025, earning global recognition for his economic management.

Global Finance magazine, in its annual Central Banker Report Cards 2025, awarded Dr. Atingi-Ego an A- grade, placing him among elite central bankers recognized for delivering price stability, economic growth, and prudent currency management.

“Most central bankers have spent the past few years battling inflation with their most effective tool: higher interest rates. As inflation recedes, we’re beginning to see the results of those tough policy decisions,” said Mr. Joseph Giarraputo, founder and editorial director of Global Finance.

He added that the ranking highlights leaders who have “delivered results with independence, discipline, and strategic foresight.”

The recognition comes at a time Uganda is experiencing steady economic growth. Finance Minister Matia Kasaija, while presenting the budget strategy for FY 2026/27 at Speke Resort Munyonyo on September 11, reported GDP growth of 6.3% in FY 2024/25, up from 6.1% the previous year.

Kasaija attributed this to government spending in productive sectors under the Parish Development Model (PDM), as well as growth in industrial output, services, tourism, and oil and gas investments. He also cited favorable weather and improved agricultural yields.

In nominal terms, Uganda’s economy expanded to Shs226.3 trillion ($61.3 billion) in FY 2024/25, up from Shs203.7 trillion ($53.9 billion) the year before. In Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) terms, GDP reached $174.2 billion.

Inflation, meanwhile, remained stable at 3.8% in July and August 2025, supported by coordinated monetary and fiscal policies, stable global fuel prices, and improved harvests. The Uganda shilling was also hailed by Kasaija as one of Africa’s most stable currencies.

First published in 1994, the Central Banker Report Cards evaluate nearly 100 central bank governors worldwide, including regional African central banks, the EU, and the Eastern Caribbean.
