Kampala, Uganda: The Electoral Commission has released the official list of symbols that will appear on the 2026 ballot papers for independent political candidates, giving aspirants distinct identifiers to help voters easily recognize them at polling stations.
According to the Commission, candidates will select their preferred symbols on a first-come, first-served basis during the nomination exercise. The approved list features a range of familiar everyday objects, including a ball, banana, boat, book, borehole, candle, car, chair, clock, coffee, cup, house, jerrycan, kettle, and megaphone.
Others include a pot, radio, saucepan, table, and television.
Officials noted that the use of symbols is critical in ensuring that every voter, including those who struggle with reading or recalling names, can confidently identify their preferred candidates.
“The system ensures inclusivity and accessibility, strengthening Uganda’s democratic process,” an EC officer told DailyExpress.
Independent candidates are now expected to choose symbols that resonate with their campaigns, values, or community identity as the 2026 General Elections draw closer.
