Police break silence on stolen police CCTV Air Conditioner in Jinja

Kiira Regional Police spokesperson SP James Mubi has refuted claims that an air conditioner at Jinja CPS was stolen, clarifying it was routine servicing.

Jinja, Uganda: Police in Jinja have dismissed as false social media reports alleging that an air conditioner supporting the Central Police Station (CPS) CCTV system was stolen on Monday night.

The claims, which circulated widely on WhatsApp, TikTok, and Facebook, suggested that a scene of crime team had been deployed to lift fingerprints at the station after the alleged theft.

But Kiira Regional Police spokesperson, SP James Mubi, clarified in a statement on Tuesday that the information was misleading. He explained that the technical team had only conducted routine servicing of the AC units at CPS Jinja to maintain optimal performance of the CCTV cameras.

“The technical team on Monday, September 15, conducted its regular servicing on the AC units at CPS Jinja Central. The purpose of the exercise is to enhance performance of the CCTV cameras by ensuring reliable footage capture, proper airflow, and temperature regulation,” SP Mubi stated.

He urged the public to disregard the false reports, noting they were intended to tarnish the image of the force.

“The public is hereby informed that the false and misleading information should be disregarded, the record has been set straight,” he emphasized.

The clarification comes against the backdrop of past theft incidents at Jinja CPS. In 2020, a flat-screen television donated by StarTimes Uganda was stolen from the station’s reception, leading to the arrest and charging of nine officers with theft and negligence of duty.
