Kampala, Uganda: Uganda Law Society (ULS) has appointed Advocate Ssali Babu as Acting Secretary and Advocate Lule Alexander as Acting Council Member for the Central Region, following the immediate removal of their predecessors, Phillip Munaabi and Geofrey Turyamusiima.
According to the statement issued by Law Society Vice President, Anthony Asiimwe, these appointments take immediate effect, pursuant to Regulations 15(1)(b) and 15(1)(c) of the Uganda Law Society (Election) Regulations, SI No. 10 of 2016, and will remain in effect until the next Annual General Meeting.
“The appointments follow a resolution by the ULS General Meeting held at Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala, to censure and remove the former post holders, Phillip Munaabi (Secretary) and Geofrey Turyamusiima (Central Region Representative), from the Council with immediate effect,” Asiimwe wrote.
Advocate Ssali Babu, a conveyancing and litigation specialist at Nsubuga K & Co. Advocates, who also serves as Secretary General of the Central Motor Club, is widely known for his community empowerment work, particularly in supporting agricultural communities in Mukono to resist land grabbing and adapt to climate change.
On the other hand, Advocate Lule Alexander, founder of Xander Advocates in Masaka City, is widely respected for his human rights defense and litigation work.
Lule gained national recognition in June 2025 after leading a lawyers’ sit-down strike over judicial understaffing and case backlog at the Masaka High Court Circuit. His campaign prompted the Judiciary to deploy an additional resident judge, resume timely civil hearings, hold two plea-bargaining sessions, and commit to operationalizing the Rakai High Court in the next financial year.
In a separate resolution at the Extra-Ordinary Meeting, the members also unanimously voted to extend the tenure of the Radical NewBar Governing Council, led by ULS President Isaac Ssemakadde, by six months to allow the formal organization of elections for the lawyers’ body.
The ULS Council, in a statement issued by Vice President Asiimwe Anthony, congratulated the two appointees, expressing confidence that they will “uphold the Society’s values and advance its mission.”
