Kampala, Uganda: The First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga has dismissed reports circulating online alleging that she intends to contest for the presidency in next year’s general elections.

In a statement issued by her Press Secretary, Bishop Samuel, on Thursday, Kadaga described the claims as “entirely false” and the handiwork of “unscrupulous and ill-mannered individuals” bent on misleading the public through fake news.

“The Office of the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, has noted with concern the circulation of a false poster on social media alleging that she intends to contest for President of Uganda in the upcoming general elections,” the statement read in part.

Kadaga, who previously served as Speaker of Parliament, clarified that her only political ambition in the upcoming elections is to seek re-election as Woman Member of Parliament for Kamuli District.

“Rt. Hon. Kadaga wishes to categorically state that she has no intention to stand for President in the forthcoming elections. She is only offering herself for re-election as Woman Member of Parliament for Kamuli District,” the statement emphasized.

She further urged the public to treat with contempt any social media posters or claims suggesting she has presidential ambitions.

Her denial comes at a time when the Busoga sub-region has been grappling with political divisions following her defeat to Speaker Anita Among in the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) race for the position of national vice chairperson (female). The contest drew sharp political lines, with Kadaga’s influence rooted in her native Busoga and Among’s connection cemented through her marriage to FUFA president and Budiope East MP Moses Magogo.
