Apac, Uganda: The Bishop of West Lango Diocese, Rt. Rev. Ceaser Nina Otim has issued a directive banning political party attire in all Anglican churches within the diocese, warning that places of worship must not be turned into platforms for partisan mobilisation.
The bishop made the announcement on Wednesday during a confirmation ceremony at All Saints Church of Uganda, Atopi Parish in Apac District, where 84 Christians were confirmed. He instructed clergy and church leaders to deny entry to anyone wearing shirts, caps, scarves, or shoes branded in political party colours.
“Effective this month, no one should be allowed to enter any Anglican church in West Lango Diocese wearing political party attire. This is a house of prayer — not a platform for politics,” Bishop Otim declared.
He said the growing practice of politicians and their supporters attending services in party regalia was causing unnecessary division and tension among worshippers. “If any candidate or politician wants to come to church, let them wear anything else — but not clothes resembling any political party colours. We must protect the sanctity of the altar,” he emphasized.
The bishop’s directive was welcomed by church and political leaders present. Rev. Can. James Okee, Vicar of Apac Archdeaconry, urged politicians to campaign with respect ahead of the 2026 elections.
“Do not insult others. Say what you will do for the people and leave the rest to the voters. And to the voters — be vigilant and ask politicians what they have done during their term before voting again,” he advised.
Apac Woman MP Hon. Betty Engola used the occasion to highlight education challenges in the district, warning parents against keeping children at home for domestic work during school time. “Too many children are being detained at home for farm work, fetching water, and cooking — while schools are in session. This must stop. Education is a right and a tool for empowerment,” she said.
With political temperatures expected to rise as Uganda heads into another campaign season, Bishop Otim reaffirmed that the church will not tolerate partisan branding. “We cannot allow the church to be used as a vehicle for political division. Our mission is to unite people under Christ — not divide them by political lines,” he stressed.
The enforcement of the ban will take immediate effect across all parishes under West Lango Diocese, with clergy instructed to ensure compliance.
