Tragedy in Budaka as two brothers drown in village stream

ASP Wilfred Kyempasa

Budaka, Uganda: The Territorial Police in Budaka District have launched investigations into a tragic drowning incident that claimed the lives of two brothers, who drowned on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, while swimming in a stream near Nalugondo village, Tademere sub-county.

The boys, identified as Mbulambago Denis, 14, and Mbulambago Pison Christopher, 7, accompanied by their 13-year-old friend Kulaila, entered the stream around midday.

According to eyewitnesses, Pison was the first to get into trouble when he struggled against the current. His elder brother, Denis, immediately jumped in to rescue him but was also swept away by the strong waters.

LC1 Chairperson of Bugade village, Mr. Kutosi George, who reported the incident, expressed his sorrow. “These boys were full of life and joy. It’s heartbreaking to see such a tragedy befall our community,” he told DailyExpress. He was among the first to respond after Kulaila rushed home to inform the parents.

Emergency responders, including divers, were quickly deployed to the scene. By afternoon, Denis’s body was recovered and taken for a post-mortem, while the search for Pison was still ongoing by press time.

ASP Kyempasa Wilfred, the PRO of Bukedi North, confirmed that police had examined and documented the scene and collected statements from witnesses. “We are working diligently to ensure that all aspects of this incident are thoroughly investigated,” he said.

Local leaders have since urged communities to be more vigilant about water safety, particularly for children. “This tragic incident is a reminder of the dangers of swimming in unmonitored areas,” a council spokesperson noted, calling on parents to closely supervise children during recreational activities.
