Kamuli, Uganda: The First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, Rt Hon Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, has reaffirmed her allegiance to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), dismissing speculation that she was considering quitting after her loss in the recent party Central Executive Committee (CEC) elections.

Speaking at her homecoming event held at Kamuli Municipal Grounds, Kadaga told supporters that despite being “humiliated and cheated” in the CEC polls at Kololo, she remained committed to the NRM cause and urged Basoga to rally behind party flag bearers, especially those who supported her during the CEC race.

“I still feel the energy to continue with NRM, even though I was cheated in the CEC elections held in Kololo, Kampala. That does not require me to quit the party. I urge you to vote for NRM flag bearers, especially those who stood with me in the elections,” Kadaga said.

The former Speaker of Parliament also accused Busoga Kingdom Premier and National Planning Authority Chairperson, Dr Joseph Muvawala Nsekere, of orchestrating schemes to undermine her political career, despite her role in securing the Kyabazinga’s enthronement in 2006.

“It all began when I informed the Kyabazinga about properties of Busoga Kingdom being sold by the Premier. President Museveni directed that kingdom properties taken during Obote’s regime be restored. Buganda and Bunyoro got theirs back, but in Busoga, our properties were sold off by Muvawala,” Kadaga said, further alleging that he [Muvawala] frustrated the establishment of an airport at Kimaka in Jinja City, despite the President commissioning the project.

Calling for unity among Basoga, Kadaga cautioned against internal fights that she said have repeatedly been used to weaken her leadership both during the 2021 Speakership race and the recent CEC elections. “Let Busoga stay united, because if we fight each other, we gain nothing. I am a victim of Basoga being used to fight me,” she said.

Speaking at the same function, Hon Kissa Steven Bakubalwayo, MP for Luuka North, who chaired the organising committee, pledged to mobilise support for Kadaga across all districts in Busoga as a gesture of appreciation to her voters.

Dr Muhammad Kisambira Lubega, the Baise Igaga clan head and third deputy prime minister of Busoga Kingdom, who was the chief guest, also urged Basoga to embrace unity in addressing the region’s challenges.

The event drew religious leaders, political figures from different parties, and several dignitaries.
