Jinja, Uganda: Police in Jinja have recovered a rusty firearm and 15 rounds of ammunition abandoned in a garden at Busowoko Central, Nawampanda Parish, Butagaya Sub County.
According to Kiira Regional Police spokesperson SP James Mubi, the firearm, which was wrapped in a sack, was discovered by a resident, Monica Namugaya, while carrying out her routine gardening work. She immediately alerted local leaders, who informed security authorities.
“It was discovered by a resident, Monica Namugaya, who was gardening when she came across a sack containing a rusty gun. She informed the chairperson veterans Nawampanda Parish, Shaban Mazereba, who later notified the area GISO and police,” SP Mubi said in a statement.
A joint security team swiftly responded to the scene, including Major Ishaka, commanding officer of the 129 Battalion in Buikwe District, who assessed the firearm and coordinated further inquiries.
Police suspect the recovered gun may have been previously used in criminal activities to terrorize communities across the Busoga sub-region and other parts of the country before being abandoned.
“The recovered gun is purported to have been terrorizing Busoga and other areas before being abandoned,” Mubi said, while urging residents to remain vigilant and continue cooperating with security forces.
The Regional Police Commander, SSP Charles Nsaba, commended Ms. Namugaya and the people of Butagaya Sub County for their quick action and goodwill in aiding the recovery.
