Umukuka appoints Mzee Dominic Wetangula Chief Advisor of Bamasaaba

Kenyan Parliament Speaker’s father, Mzee Dominic Wetangula is Chief Advisor of the Bamasaaba cultural institution.

Bungoma, Kenya: His Highness the Umukuka III, Jude Mike Mudoma, has appointed Mzee Dominic Wetangula, father of the current Speaker of the Kenyan Parliament, as the Chief Advisor of the Bamasaaba cultural institution.

Mr Steven Masiga, the spokesperson of the Bamasaaba cultural institution, confirmed the appointment to DailyExpress, explaining that Mzee Wetangula will play a pivotal role in guiding the Umukuka whenever the institution veers off the cultural track.

“His role as a chief advisor is broad and discretionary, and I trust he will offer His Highness invaluable counsel in the administration of the kingdom,” Masiga said, adding that he is expected to serve as the guardian of the Bamasaaba heritage, ensuring that traditional values, beliefs, and customs remain safeguarded.

Mzee Dominic Wetangula holds deep cultural authority within the Bamasaaba community. During the demise of Umukuka I, emeritus Wilson Wamimbi last year, he was the only person granted permission by both the current Umukuka and the Government of Uganda to view Wamimbi’s body after it had been sealed by Uganda Funeral Services.

A teacher by profession, Wetangula has served the Bamasaaba cultural institution in various capacities since the reign of Umukuka I. He traces his roots to Bubutu in Namisindwa, where his forefathers migrated to Kenya in the late 1890s.
