Kampala, Uganda: Lapaire Uganda has expanded its footprint with the launch of its 19th branch in Kawempe, Ku Ttaano, further boosting access to affordable eye care in the country.

The new outlet, which also marks the 15th branch in the Kampala metropolitan area, was officially opened on Tuesday, September 23, with hundreds of residents turning up for free eye tests and health consultations.

Speaking at the event, John Hillary Balyejusa, Lapaire’s Public Relations and Communications Officer, said the expansion reflects the company’s mission to transform eye care accessibility in Uganda and across Africa.

“Today, we are opening our 19th branch in Uganda, located here in Kawempe opposite Shell Ku Ttaano. Our goal is simple: to make eye care accessible to every African,” Balyejusa said, adding, ” At Lapaire, we believe that clear sight changes everything, and through transparent pricing and flexible payment plans, we are ensuring that even those with low or medium incomes can access quality eye care.”

The launch comes against a backdrop of increasing demand for eye care services in Uganda, where an estimated 4.2 million people live with visual impairment. The country, with nearly 50 million people, has fewer than 500 eye specialists, leaving many untreated due to high costs and limited access.

However, Balyejusa stressed that most eye defects go unnoticed until they are advanced. “Eye care in Uganda is a serious issue, compounded by the fact that eye defects don’t always cause pain. By the time people feel discomfort, it’s often too late. That’s why we encourage everyone to get tested at least once a year,” he added.

During the opening, the Lapaire team conducted free eye check-ups, fitted residents with glasses, and offered guidance on proper eye care. The company’s glasses are priced from UGX 105,000, with flexible installment plans to ensure affordability.

Looking ahead, Lapaire Uganda aims to test at least 1 million people across its growing network in the coming weeks. The Kawempe branch will also extend free consultations throughout the week and engage schools and institutions to raise awareness about optometry as a career path.
